Carbon-13 is a stable isotope of carbon. It has the same number of protons as the more common carbon-12 isotope, but a different number of neutrons. Carbon-13 accounts for approximately 1% of all carbon on Earth.
Due to its unique isotopic composition, carbon-13 is used in a wide range of applications, including scientific research, medical diagnostics, and industrial processes.
It is particularly valuable as a tracer in studies of metabolic pathways as well as environmental and geological processes.
